Our classroom will commit to reading this year. Each student will choose his/her own book, and we will read independently for 15-20 minutes every day.
SSR NORMS:
1. EVERYONE will choose his/her own book and will be vested in it until the end.
2. Each person will choose a book that interests him/her.
3. No restroom breaks / errand running will be allowed during SSR. Students are expected to stay on task and focus. However, a student will be allowed to return a library book and check out a new one during SSR.
4. Students should choose books on their reading level or slightly above.
5. Students are encouraged to think about their reading as well as reference their reading during our writing tasks.
6. Books may not be in your lap with head resting on desk. This is a sleeping position, not a reading position.
7. Headphones, earphones, earbuds are not allowed while reading.
8. All technology should be put away during SSR.
9. When a student finishes a book, SSR is not done. SSR is never done! Students choose another book!
10. Students should give each book they choose a 50-page chance. You might actually like it if you give it a fair try, but it generally takes a while to get into a character.
11. Students may read a textbook or novel during SSR, but they may not complete written work during SSR.
12. SSR is not study hall.
13. Students are encouraged to read a book where text is the primary component and does not compete with pictures.
